I would like a mention message to be a different color.

You can use some css targeting the class names; .bbWrapper .ug should do it.

Still breaks my site after the new update, i am able to access admin area but front end is broken, i have disabled untill fix.

That is a bug in XFES 2.2.0 Beta 1
